4098-9780 Simplex Supervised Relay Base

The Simplex 4098-9780 is an addressable supervised relay sensor base for the TrueAlarm 4098-series detector family. It includes a built-in Form C dry contact relay that the Simplex panel activates independently — enabling elevator recall, door holder release, or fan shutdown at each detector location without a separate control module. IDNet and MAPNET II compatible. In stock, factory sealed, ships same-day from California.

What Is the 4098-9780?

The Simplex 4098-9780 is a supervised relay sensor base in the TrueAlarm 4098 addressable fire alarm product family, manufactured by Simplex (Johnson Controls). Unlike a standard plain base, the 4098-9780 incorporates a Form C (NO/NC/COM) dry contact relay that the fire alarm control panel can activate independently via SLC programming — without consuming an additional SLC address for a separate control module.

Key Features

  • Form C Relay: Built-in dry contact relay (NO/NC/COM) rated 2A at 30 VDC / 0.5A at 125 VAC resistive. Panel-controlled independently of detector alarm status.
  • Supervised Relay: Relay output circuit is supervised for open and short circuit faults — any wiring failure generates a trouble signal at the panel.
  • Single-Address Efficiency: Sensor head and relay output share one SLC address. No second address required for the relay, unlike standalone control modules.
  • Protocol: IDNet and MAPNET II — compatible with Simplex 4100ES, 4010ES, 4007ES, 4008.
  • Sensor Compatibility: Accepts all TrueAlarm 4098-series heads: 4098-9601, 4098-9602, 4098-9714, 4098-9733.
  • Wiring: SLC terminals for 2-wire loop. Separate relay output terminals (NO, COM, NC). Max wire length between base and relay load: 100 ft.
  • Mounting: Mounts to 4-inch octagonal or square electrical box. Use Adapter Plate Kit 4098-9832 for surface-mounted boxes.
  • Temperature Rating: 150°F (65°C) ambient with 4098-9734 heat sensor. Maximum 100°F with all other sensor types.

Applications – Where This Base Is Used

  • Elevator lobbies — relay triggers elevator recall on fire alarm per NFPA 72 and elevator code
  • Corridor magnetic door holder locations — relay de-energizes holder on alarm to close fire-rated doors
  • HVAC mechanical rooms — relay shuts down air handling unit fan on smoke detection
  • Stairwell pressurization — relay activates stairwell fan on alarm to maintain egress path
  • Any location requiring both smoke detection and relay control at one SLC address

Benefits

Choosing the 4098-9780 reduces wiring complexity because the base doubles as both detector holder and supervised relay without requiring separate control runs. For facility managers maintaining older Simplex infrastructure, this base delivers a smooth upgrade path it is backward-compatible with legacy 4020, 4100, and 4120 panels while integrating cleanly with modern 4100ES systems. Supervised operation means the panel continuously verifies relay integrity, reducing the risk of silent failures that can compromise life-safety interlocks. Installers appreciate the plug-in form factor because it cuts commissioning time on large projects, and end users gain reliable activation of critical auxiliary systems during an alarm event.

Why Source From QuickShipFire?

QuickShipFire stocks the 4098-9780 in our California warehouse for same-day shipping. Every unit is factory-sealed in original Simplex/Johnson Controls packaging. If you are unsure whether the relay contact rating is suitable for your specific load (fan starter, door holder, elevator controller), call our technical team at (833) 747-7845 before ordering. We can confirm rated contact capacity against your load specifications.

COMPATIBILITY & SENSOR REFERENCE

Compatible with Simplex TrueAlarm 4098-series sensor heads only. Not compatible with Silent Knight SD505, Notifier, or Fire-Lite detectors. The relay is programmed at the Simplex FACP — relay activation can be set for detector alarm, panel alarm, or any panel event.

6. INSTALLATION & WIRING NOTES

Installation follows standard TrueAlarm base procedure with additional relay output wiring steps.

  1. Mount 4-inch electrical box at detector location per NFPA 72 spacing requirements.
  2. Run SLC 2-conductor wiring into the box. Connect SLC+ and SLC– to base SLC terminals.
  3. Run relay output wiring from controlled device (door holder, fan starter, elevator controller) to relay NO/NC/COM terminals. Max run: 100 ft.
  4. Mount the 4098-9780 base to the electrical box.
  5. Install sensor head by aligning pins and rotating clockwise until locked.
  6. At the panel, program relay output for this device’s SLC address to the desired activation event.
  7. Test: activate detector in walk-test mode and verify relay closes and controlled device responds correctly.

⚠ IMPORTANT: The relay contact rating is 2A @ 30 VDC resistive. Do NOT connect inductive loads (motor starters, contactors) directly to relay contacts without an interposing relay rated for the inductive load. Exceeding contact capacity will damage the relay.

What devices can the 4098-9780 relay output control?
The Form C contacts (2A at 30 VDC / 0.5A at 125 VAC resistive) directly control: magnetic door holders (100–400 mA draw), low-current relay coils, and signal circuits. For higher-current inductive loads like fan starters or elevator controllers, use the 4098-9780 relay to switch an interposing relay rated for the load current.
Does the 4098-9780 use a separate SLC address for the relay function?
No, that is the key advantage. The relay is integrated into the base and shares the sensor head's single SLC address. On address-constrained 198-point systems, this can be the difference between staying within capacity and needing an additional panel
Is the 4098-9780 relay normally-open or normally-closed?
Normally Open (NO), Normally Closed (NC), and Common (COM) terminals are all provided. Wire to the appropriate terminal for your application — door holders typically use NC (holder de-energizes on alarm to release the door).
What is the maximum wire run from relay output to controlled device?
100 feet maximum between 4098-9780 relay terminals and the controlled device. For longer runs, use an interposing relay close to the controlled device and run the 4098-9780 output to the interposing relay coil.
Can I use the 4098-9780 on a Notifier or Fire-Lite panel?
No. The 4098-9780 uses Simplex IDNet/MAPNET II protocol and is only compatible with Simplex panels (4100ES, 4010ES, 4007ES, 4008).
Is the sensor head included with the base?
No. Base and sensor head are sold separately. Order the appropriate sensor head (4098-9601, 4098-9714, etc.) in addition to this base.
What adapter plate is needed for surface-mounted electrical boxes?
Simplex Adapter Plate Kit 4098-9832. Must be installed with textured side toward the electrical box.
How do I test the relay after installation?
Put the panel in walk-test mode. Activate the detector at this address using canned smoke or the panel's device test function. Observe the controlled device (door should release, fan should stop). Verify panel event log shows relay output activation. Restore to normal and confirm relay resets.
